USPS Warns of Secret Shopper Scam
An official release from the United States Postal Inspection Service warns people across the United States of a new scam in which many are falling victim to.
In this latest scam, individuals receive a check, relating to mystery shop services, for upwards of thousands of dollars. Instructions may direct the recipient to deposit the check, initiate a wire for a particular sum on money, and keep the remaining funds as payment for completing a mystery shopper survey.
Unfortunately many victims, including those in the Pine Belt of Mississippi, are coming to realize the checks are fradulent. This leaves the victim with the funds being returned out of their account and the liability of the deposit; ultimately paying out-of-pocket for the money they wired to the scammers.
Be vigilant of any check or job offering that seems to good to be true, especially those that require you to pay out of your own pocket before receiving payment for services rendered.
Police and Federal Postal Inspectors are aware of this scam and advise those that receive a similar offer to report to the Postal Inspectors online or call 1-877-876-2455.
